70 new members in KOSID
In July 2019, 70 new members joined the Kosovo Civil Society Consortium for Sustainable Development (KOSID), including both individuals and organizations that are focused on environmental issues and strongly support KOSID’s mission.
The new members of the nongovernmental consortium all signed an agreement establishing a cooperative relationship between themselves and KOSID, aiding the consortium in its endeavours to prevent the new “Kosova e Re” coal based power plant and promote alternative energy sources that are less harmful to the environment. They will also support KOSID in promoting sustainable development, which should happen parallel to Kosovo’s economic growth.
The consortium’s new recruits, who come from across the entire territory of Kosovo, underwent a series of training sessions in which they were advised on how to use KOSID methodology to combat environmental problems in their communities. KOSID methodology incorporates what is described as the “civil society triangle”, combining scientific research and data, grassroots activism and the media.
KOSID, through its considerable research capacities and the diversity of its constituent organisations has become one of the most influential voices in Kosovo on issues of environmental protection, sustainable development and tackling climate change. In 2018, after eight years of active engagement, the consortium was able to help convince the World Bank to withdraw its financing for building a third coal powered plant.
The consortium was established in 2011. It has since functioned as a network of nongovernmental organisations that has conducted research through think tanks, field research through grassroots organisations, as well as investigative reporting.
In March 2019, KOSID was registered as an NGO, with the purpose of functioning as a hub and network that shares experience gained in fighting for a clean environment and sustainable development.
